Meet the Last Tay Spinners

July 16 to October 9 2022, The Verdant Works Museum, Dundee DD1 5BT

This exhibition documents one of the last days of jute spinning at Tay Spinners in Dundee before closure in 1998. Using colour and black and white photographs, 27 people are shown at work in the mill. The pictures record the processing of raw jute into finished yarn.
The exhibition also includes artworks created during lockdown based on the photographs.

The Lowland Canals

Our first meeting of the new session is on Thursday, 15th September, when Ian Scott will speak on “The Lowland Canals”.

Ian Scott was Assistant Principal at Falkirk College and has been Director and National Chairman of the Saltire Society.  Ian’s main interest is the history of the Falkirk area and he was a founder member of Falkirk Local History Society. He has written several books on the subject including Falkirk: a History published in 2006 and over 400 historical articles for the Falkirk Herald.

Ian has visited us before when, in October 2019, he spoke on James Watt.

As usual, we meet in the Abbey Church Halls at 7:30pm and visitors will be welcome.

Excavations at Finlaggan, Islay, the Centre of the Lordship of the Isles

Dr Caldwell is an archaeologist who has a strong interest in the medieval history of the Western Isles. He directed major excavations at Finlaggan, the island in a loch on Islay where the Lordship of the Isles was centred. He worked at the National Museum of Scotland for 38 years and was Keeper of two curatorial departments. He has published over 100 papers and articles and seven books and is currently the President of The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
